 Our History

The story began in 1959 when the Carrim brothers founded Metro Fabrics in Church Street, opposite the State Theatre. Despite challenges like the Group Areas Act, which forced the business to relocate several times, the Carrim brothers persevered. They moved to Du Toit Street and later to the corner of Du Toit and the old Schoeman Streets, where they traded as Metro Home Fabrics until 1986. It was during this period that the store underwent a significant transformation and was rebranded as Metro Home Centre.

In 1986, Metro Home Centre began introducing appliances and furniture to its existing fabric department, responding to customer demand for a wider range of products. The directors decided in August 1996 to move to the current premises at 410 Madiba Street, where the store continued to thrive. With nearly 100 years of collective retail experience, directors Iqbal, Shahin, and Ozayr Carrim restructured and rebranded the business, giving it a unique identity as MHC World.
